فَإِذَا قَرَأْتَ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ فَٱسْتَعِذْ بِٱللَّهِ مِنَ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنِ ٱلرَّجِيمِ
Fa izaa qara tal Quraana fasta'iz billaahi minashh Shai taanir rajeem
So when you recite the Qur'an, seek refuge in God from Satan, the outcast.
This is the verse behind the isti'adha, the short formula of refuge said before opening the Qur'an. Its grammar carries the interest: the Arabic verb for reciting stands in the completed past, so it reads as an action already finished, which most commentators take to mean when you are about to recite, while a minority held to the plain sense and placed the words after. The two verses following explain the request by naming whom Satan actually has power over.
