Surah At-Tawbah — 9:5

Fa izansalakhal Ashhurul Hurumu faqtulul mushrikeena haisu wajattumoohum wa khuzoohum wahsuroohum qaq'udoo lahum kulla marsad; fa-in taaboo wa aqaamus Salaata wa aatawuz Zakaata fakhalloo sabeelahum; innal laaha Ghafoorur Raheem

A kiedy miną święte miesiące, wtedy zabijajcie bałwochwalców, tam gdzie ich znajdziecie; chwytajcie ich, oblegajcie i przygotowujcie dla nich wszelkie zasadzki! Ale jeśli oni się nawrócą i będą odprawiać modlitwę, i dawać jałmużnę, to dajcie im wolną drogę. Zaprawdę, Bóg jest przebaczający, litościwy!

When the sacred months have passed, fight the idolaters wherever you find them — capture them, besiege them, and lie in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they repent, establish the prayer, and give the alms, let them go their way. Indeed, God is forgiving, merciful.

Reflection

Insalakha describes a hide being pulled off, so the sacred months are pictured slipping away from the year rather than merely ending. Four commands of war follow, and a single conditional clause then suspends all four the moment the other side turns; the last third of the sentence is about calling it off. Naming prayer and alms rather than a bare ceasefire puts the terms in the language of a shared community.
