قَـٰتِلُوا۟ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَلَا بِٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ وَلَا يُحَرِّمُونَ مَا حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُۥ وَلَا يَدِينُونَ دِينَ ٱلْحَقِّ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ حَتَّىٰ يُعْطُوا۟ ٱلْجِزْيَةَ عَن يَدٍ وَهُمْ صَـٰغِرُونَ
Qaatilul lazeena laa yu'minoona billaahi wa laa bil yawmil Aakhiri wa laa yuharrimoona maa harramal laahu wa Rasooluhoo wa laa yadeenoona deenal haqqi minal lazeena ootul Kitaaba hattaa yu'tul jizyata ai yadinw wa hum saaghiroon
Zwalczajcie tych, którzy nie wierzą w Boga i w Dzień Ostatni, który nie zakazują tego, co zakazał Bóg i Jego Posłaniec, i nie poddają się religii prawdy - spośród tych, którym została dana Księga - dopóki oni nie zapłacą daniny własną ręką i nie zostaną upokorzeni.
Fight those among the people given the scripture who do not believe in God or the last day, who do not forbid what God and his Messenger have forbidden, and who do not follow the way of truth — until they pay the tribute, willingly subdued.
Conduct is what the description here consists of: four clauses, each naming something the people addressed do or fail to treat as binding, and the group is identified by that conduct. The command carries its own terminus, the payment, so what it authorises has a stated end written into it. Verses 30 and 31 then supply the grounds, placing this line between an exclusion already announced and the reasons for it.
