وَفَـٰكِهَةً وَأَبًّا
Wa faki hataw-wa abba.
I owoce, i pastwiska
and fruits and pasture,
Fruit and abb split between the two beneficiaries of the next verse, fruit for people and abb for their livestock, and that pairing is how most commentators arrived at pasture as its meaning. This is the word's one appearance in scripture, and commentators relate that ʿUmar, reciting the passage, admitted he did not know it and then let the question go as overreach. The tradition kept his admission alongside the gloss.
