Qaḍb derives from the verb to cut, and commentators took it as a green crop that is cut and grows back to be cut again, lucerne in some reports and edible greens in others. Placed beside grapes, it pairs a fruit that needs years of tending on the vine with a plant that returns weeks after the sickle.
