Surah Al-Anfal — 8:66

Al'aana khaffafal laahu 'ankum wa 'alima anna feekum da'faa; fa-iny yakum minkum mi'atun saabiratuny yaghliboo mi'atayn; wa iny-yakum minkum alfuny yaghlibooo alfaini bi iznil laah; wallaahu ma'as saabireen

Teraz ulżył wam Bóg; On wie, że jesteście słabi. A więc jeśli będzie wśród was stu sprawiedliwych, to oni zwyciężą dwustu; a jeśli będzie was tysiąc, to oni zwyciężą dwa tysiące - za pozwoleniem Boga. Bóg jest przecież z cierpliwymi!

Now God has lightened things for you, knowing that there is weakness among you. So if there are a hundred steadfast among you, they will overcome two hundred; and if there are a thousand of you, they will overcome two thousand by God's permission. And God is with the steadfast.

Reflection

The ratio set one verse earlier is revised here, ten to one becoming two to one, and the verse states the reason as a lightening granted for a weakness God knows about. Commentators cite this pair as the plainest case of one ruling replacing another within consecutive lines, though they differ over whether to call it abrogation or a concession tied to circumstance. Al-āna, "now", marks where the earlier standard stops.
