Tabattul carries the sense of cutting away, the same stem that gives Maryam her title al-Batul, so the devotion here is a severing of ties toward one direction. Arabic doubles the emphasis by pairing the verb with a cognate noun in a different pattern, which English can only flatten into an adverb.
