خُذِ ٱلْعَفْوَ وَأْمُرْ بِٱلْعُرْفِ وَأَعْرِضْ عَنِ ٱلْجَـٰهِلِينَ
khuzil 'afwa waamur bil'urfi waa'rid 'anil jaahileen
Trzymaj się przebaczenia! Nakazuj dobro, a odsuwaj się od nieświadomych!
Be forgiving, urge what is right, and turn away from the ignorant.
Three imperatives, and the tradition treated them together as a summary of character. Al-'afw carries both senses at once, pardon and the surplus a person can spare, so early readers took the command as accepting what people give easily rather than demanding their utmost. The verse immediately after names the prompting that makes such restraint hard, which turns the instruction back toward the one receiving it.
