Surah Al-Qalam — 68:22

Anighdoo 'alaa harsikum in kuntum saarimeen

"Set out early to your field if you mean to harvest."

Reflection

This is the sentence the parable is built around, spoken after the garden is gone and before anyone has seen it. The briskness is what stings: the plan and the confidence are perfectly intact, and the thing they apply to has already been taken. The root of the word for their harvesting is the root of the word used in verse 20 for what the garden became, so they meant to cut it and something cut it first.
