فَإِذَا بَلَغْنَ أَجَلَهُنَّ فَأَمْسِكُوهُنَّ بِمَعْرُوفٍ أَوْ فَارِقُوهُنَّ بِمَعْرُوفٍ وَأَشْهِدُوا۟ ذَوَىْ عَدْلٍ مِّنكُمْ وَأَقِيمُوا۟ ٱلشَّهَـٰدَةَ لِلَّهِ ۚ ذَٰلِكُمْ يُوعَظُ بِهِۦ مَن كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ ۚ وَمَن يَتَّقِ ٱللَّهَ يَجْعَل لَّهُۥ مَخْرَجًا
Fa izaa balaghna ajalahunna fa amsikoohunna bima'roofin aw faariqoohunna bima'roofinw wa ashhidoo zawai 'adlim minkum wa aqeemush shahaadata lillaah; zaalikum yoo'azu bihee man kaana yu'minu billaahi wal yawmil aakhir; wa many yattaqil laaha yaj'al lahoo makhrajaa
A kiedy nadejdzie ich termin, to albo zatrzymajcie je w sposób godny, albo rozstańcie się z nimi w sposób godny. I wezwijcie świadków, dwóch sprawiedliwych spośród was, i ustanówcie świadectwo wobec Boga. Przez to napominany jest ten, kto wierzy w Boga i w Dzień Ostatni. A temu, kto się boi Boga, On przygotuje jakieś wyjście;
When they have reached the end of their term, either keep them honorably or part from them honorably, and call two just witnesses from among you, and uphold the testimony for the sake of God. This is what whoever believes in God and the last day is admonished by. And whoever is mindful of God, he will make for them a way out,
The promise at the end of this verse, quoted so often on its own, sits inside a set of instructions about ending a marriage. Its first readers heard it as reassurance to people facing the loss of a household, and the passage keeps the pressure on conduct at that moment: two witnesses called, the testimony given for God's sake and not for either party. Jurists have read the witnessing requirement in more than one way, and the tradition still differs.
