لَا يُؤَاخِذُكُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِٱللَّغْوِ فِىٓ أَيْمَـٰنِكُمْ وَلَـٰكِن يُؤَاخِذُكُم بِمَا عَقَّدتُّمُ ٱلْأَيْمَـٰنَ ۖ فَكَفَّـٰرَتُهُۥٓ إِطْعَامُ عَشَرَةِ مَسَـٰكِينَ مِنْ أَوْسَطِ مَا تُطْعِمُونَ أَهْلِيكُمْ أَوْ كِسْوَتُهُمْ أَوْ تَحْرِيرُ رَقَبَةٍ ۖ فَمَن لَّمْ يَجِدْ فَصِيَامُ ثَلَـٰثَةِ أَيَّامٍ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ كَفَّـٰرَةُ أَيْمَـٰنِكُمْ إِذَا حَلَفْتُمْ ۚ وَٱحْفَظُوٓا۟ أَيْمَـٰنَكُمْ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُبَيِّنُ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمْ ءَايَـٰتِهِۦ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ
Laa yu'aakhizukumul laahu billaghwi feee aimaanikum wa laakiny ya'aakhizukum bimaa 'aqqattumul aimaana fakaf faaratuhooo it'aamu 'asharati masaakeena min awsati maa tut'imoona ahleekum aw kiswatuhum aw tahreeru raqabatin famallam yajid fa Siyaamu salaasati aiyaam; zaalika kaffaaratu aimaanikum izaa halaftum; wahfazooo aimaanakum; kazaalika yubaiyinul laahu lakum Aayaatihee la'allakum tashkuroon
Bóg nie będzie was karał za wasze lekkomyślne przysięgi, lecz będzie was karał za przysięgi złożone rozważnie. Możecie się za to okupić żywieniem dziesięciu biedaków - co będzie średnią tego, czym żywicie waszą rodzinę - albo ubieraniem ich, albo też wyzwoleniem niewolnika. A kto nie ma takiej możliwości, to przez trzy dni obowiązuje go post. Taki jest okup za wasze przysięgi, jeśli przysięgliście. Zachowujcie więc wasze przysięgi! W ten sposób wyjaśnia wam Bóg Swoje znaki! Być może, będziecie wdzięczni!
God will not hold you accountable for thoughtless words in your oaths, but he will hold you accountable for the oaths you bind yourselves to. The atonement is to feed ten needy people with the average of what you feed your own families, or to clothe them, or to free a person from bondage. Whoever cannot find the means should fast for three days. This is the atonement for your oaths when you have sworn. So guard your oaths. In this way God makes his signs clear to you, so that you may be grateful.
The measure for feeding is set by your own household's ordinary table, so the same broken oath costs a wealthy household more than a poor one and nobody can discharge it at a stranger's standard. Three ways of settling it are offered outright, with fasting reserved for whoever can find none of them. Jurists divided over whether the three stand as a free choice or in the order given, and the wording leaves that open.
