Surah Az-Zumar — 39:57

أَوْ تَقُولَ لَوْ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ هَدَىٰنِى لَكُنتُ مِنَ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ

Aw taqoola law annal laaha hadaanee lakuntu minal muttaqeen

Albo żeby nie powiedziała: "Jeśliby Bóg poprowadził mnie drogą prostą, to znalazłabym się wśród bogobojnych!"

Or it says, "If only God had guided me, I would have been among the mindful."

Reflection

Regret is put in the mouth of a soul that has not spoken it yet: the three laments in this passage are quoted in advance, to people still being invited back two verses earlier. This middle one moves the blame from the speaker to God, and the reply comes at verse 59, that the signs did in fact arrive. Arabic leaves the speaker indefinite, so the line stays open for whoever reads it.
