Surah Sad — 38:21

Wa hal ataaka naba'ul khasm; iz tasawwarul mihraab

Has the story of the disputants reached you — when they climbed over the wall into the prayer chamber?

Reflection

The question turns outward, putting to the listener a story about Dawud rather than continuing the list of what he was given. Khasm is a single word doing plural duty, covering both litigants at once before verse 22 splits them into two speakers. Commentators disagree over who they were, angels sent in human form to bring the case, or ordinary men, and the climb over the wall is what makes the visit strange either way.
