Surah As-Sajdah — 32:5

Yudabbirul amra minas samaaa'i ilal ardi Thumma ya'ruju ilai Thumma ya'ruju ilaihi fee yawmin kaana miqdaaruhoooo alfa sanatim mimmaa ta'uddoon

God directs every affair from the heaven to the earth; then it ascends to him on a day whose measure is a thousand years of what you count.

Reflection

The verb yudabbir describes ongoing management, and its position right after the throne verse matters: rising over the throne is followed at once by continuous governing, so the image is of rule in operation. On the measure of that day, readings differ. Some take the thousand years as the span of the command's descent and return, others as a scale of divine time set against ours, and 70:4 gives fifty thousand for a different day.
