Surah Ali 'Imran — 3:186

Latublawunna feee amwaalikum wa anfusikum wa latasma'unna minal lazeena ootul Kitaaba min qablikum wa minal lazeena ashrakooo azan kaseeraa; wa in tasbiroo wa tattaqoo fa inna zaalika min 'azmil umoor

Wy z pewnością będziecie doświadczani w waszych dobrach i w was samych; i usłyszycie od tych, którym została dana Księga przed wami, i od bałwochwalców - wiele złego. A jeśli będziecie cierpliwi i jeśli będziecie bogobojni, to okażecie prawdziwe zdecydowanie.

You will surely be tested in your wealth and in yourselves, and you will surely hear much hurtful speech from those who were given the scripture before you and from those who ascribe partners to God. But if you are patient and mindful of God, that is among the matters requiring firm resolve.

Reflection

The closing phrase files this verse with the only two others described the same way, as matters requiring firm resolve: the advice Luqman gives his son at 31:17, on patience through whatever befalls, and 42:43, on patience together with forgiving. Both verbs of testing carry the emphatic construction Arabic reserves for oaths, so the ordeal is announced as certain, and the part singled out for endurance is speech that will have to be heard.
