Surah Taha — 20:56

وَلَقَدْ أَرَيْنَـٰهُ ءَايَـٰتِنَا كُلَّهَا فَكَذَّبَ وَأَبَىٰ

Wa laqad arainaahu Aayaatinaa kullahaa fakaz zaba wa abaa

I pokazaliśmy Faraonowi wszystkie Nasze znaki, lecz on uznał je za kłamstwo i odrzucił.

And we showed him all our signs, but he denied them and refused.

Reflection

Narration breaks into the dialogue here to give the verdict before the contest is even proposed: Pharaoh has been answered on his own questions since verse 49, and the summary lands while he is still talking. Two verbs carry it, one about truth and one about will — denial can follow a mistake, while abā is refusal, the verb used of Iblis at 2:34. What the signs were is disputed, since the verses just before argue from cradled earth and rain rather than wonders.
