وَدَّ كَثِيرٌ مِّنْ أَهْلِ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ لَوْ يَرُدُّونَكُم مِّنۢ بَعْدِ إِيمَـٰنِكُمْ كُفَّارًا حَسَدًا مِّنْ عِندِ أَنفُسِهِم مِّنۢ بَعْدِ مَا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُمُ ٱلْحَقُّ ۖ فَٱعْفُوا۟ وَٱصْفَحُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ يَأْتِىَ ٱللَّهُ بِأَمْرِهِۦٓ ۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ قَدِيرٌ
Wadda kaseerum min ahlil kitaabi law yaruddoo nakum mim ba'di eemaanikum kuffaaran hasadam min 'indi anfusihim mim ba'di maa tabaiyana lahumul haqqu fa'foo washfahoo hattaa yaa tiyallaahu bi amrih; innal laaha 'alaa kulli shai'in qadeer
Wielu spośród ludu Księgi chciałoby uczynić was ponownie niewiernymi, kiedy już uwierzyliście, przez zawiść pochodzącą od nich samych; a przecież prawda stała się dla nich jasna. Many of the People of the Book would love to turn you back into rejecters after you have believed, out of envy rooted in their own selves — even after the truth has become clear to them. So pardon and overlook until God brings his command. Indeed, God has power over all things.
Pardon is ordered here with a limit written into it: the instruction runs only until God issues his own decision, so the endpoint belongs to God and not to the people who were wronged. Commentators divide over whether later verses on fighting closed that window or whether this stays the ordinary posture toward hostility one has no power to answer. Ṣafḥ is the broader of the two verbs, turning the face away from a matter entirely.
