Surah An-Nahl — 16:36

Wa laqad ba'asnaa fee kulli ummatir Rasoolan ani'budul laaha wajtanibut Taaghoota faminhum man hadal laahu wa minhum man haqqat 'alaihid dalaalah; faseeroo fil ardi fanzuroo kaifa kaana 'aaqibatul mukazzibeen

Posłaliśmy do każdego narodu posłańca: "Czcijcie Boga i unikajcie bałwochwalstwa!"

And we raised up in every community a messenger: "Worship God and shun false powers." Among them were those whom God guided, and among them were those upon whom misguidance took hold. So travel through the earth and see how the deniers met their end.

Reflection

This meets the excuse quoted just before it, where God's will was offered as the reason for their worship: a messenger was raised in every community, so the reply is that everyone was told. Ijtanibū is built on the word for a side, and the instruction is to set false power off to one side and walk past it, a lighter demand than tearing it down and a harder one to keep.
