Surah Al-Jinn — 72:23

I only deliver [what I receive] from God- only His messages.’ Whoever disobeys God and His Messenger will have Hell’s Fire as his permanent home:

only a delivery from God and his messages. Whoever disobeys God and his Messenger — for him is the fire of jahannam, where they will remain forever.

Reflection

This continues the sentence begun in the verse before, and the exception names the one thing the messenger does hold after a run of disclaimers: the delivering itself. Commentators have differed over what the exception attaches to, the refuge just denied or the power denied two verses earlier, which shifts whether conveying the message is his shelter or his only possession. The warning after it lands harder for following that narrowing.
