Chapter 71 of the Qur'an · “Noah” · 28 verses · revealed in Makkah
71:1 إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا نُوحًا إِلَىٰ قَوْمِهِۦٓ أَنْ أَنذِرْ قَوْمَكَ مِن قَبْلِ أَن يَأْتِيَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌWe sent Noah to his people: ‘Warn your people, before a painful punishment comes to them.’
71:2قَالَ يَـٰقَوْمِ إِنِّى لَكُمْ نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌAnd so he said, ‘My people, I am here to warn you plainly.
71:3أَنِ ٱعْبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَٱتَّقُوهُ وَأَطِيعُونِServe God, be mindful of Him and obey me.
71:4يَغْفِرْ لَكُم مِّن ذُنُوبِكُمْ وَيُؤَخِّرْكُمْ إِلَىٰٓ أَجَلٍ مُّسَمًّى ۚ إِنَّ أَجَلَ ٱللَّهِ إِذَا جَآءَ لَا يُؤَخَّرُ ۖ لَوْ كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَHe will forgive you your sins and spare you until your appointed time––when God’s appointed time arrives it cannot be postponed. If only you understood!’
71:5قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّى دَعَوْتُ قَوْمِى لَيْلًا وَنَهَارًاHe said, ‘My Lord, I have called my people night and day,
71:6فَلَمْ يَزِدْهُمْ دُعَآءِىٓ إِلَّا فِرَارًاbut the more I call them, the further they run away:
71:7وَإِنِّى كُلَّمَا دَعَوْتُهُمْ لِتَغْفِرَ لَهُمْ جَعَلُوٓا۟ أَصَـٰبِعَهُمْ فِىٓ ءَاذَانِهِمْ وَٱسْتَغْشَوْا۟ ثِيَابَهُمْ وَأَصَرُّوا۟ وَٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟ ٱسْتِكْبَارًاevery time I call them, so that You may forgive them, they thrust their fingers into their ears, cover their heads with their garments, persist in their rejection, and grow more insolent and arrogant.
71:8ثُمَّ إِنِّى دَعَوْتُهُمْ جِهَارًاI have tried calling them openly.
71:9ثُمَّ إِنِّىٓ أَعْلَنتُ لَهُمْ وَأَسْرَرْتُ لَهُمْ إِسْرَارًاI have tried preaching to them in public and speaking to them in private.
71:10فَقُلْتُ ٱسْتَغْفِرُوا۟ رَبَّكُمْ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ غَفَّارًاI said, “Ask forgiveness of your Lord: He is ever forgiving.
71:11يُرْسِلِ ٱلسَّمَآءَ عَلَيْكُم مِّدْرَارًاHe will send down abundant rain from the sky for you;
71:12وَيُمْدِدْكُم بِأَمْوَٰلٍ وَبَنِينَ وَيَجْعَل لَّكُمْ جَنَّـٰتٍ وَيَجْعَل لَّكُمْ أَنْهَـٰرًاHe will give you wealth and sons; He will provide you with gardens and rivers.
71:13مَّا لَكُمْ لَا تَرْجُونَ لِلَّهِ وَقَارًاWhat is the matter with you? Why will you not fear God’s majesty,
71:14وَقَدْ خَلَقَكُمْ أَطْوَارًاwhen He has created you stage by stage?
71:15أَلَمْ تَرَوْا۟ كَيْفَ خَلَقَ ٱللَّهُ سَبْعَ سَمَـٰوَٰتٍ طِبَاقًاHave you ever wondered how God created seven heavens, one above the other,
71:16وَجَعَلَ ٱلْقَمَرَ فِيهِنَّ نُورًا وَجَعَلَ ٱلشَّمْسَ سِرَاجًاplaced the moon as a light in them and the sun as a lamp,
71:17وَٱللَّهُ أَنۢبَتَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَرْضِ نَبَاتًاhow God made you spring forth from the earth like a plant,
71:18ثُمَّ يُعِيدُكُمْ فِيهَا وَيُخْرِجُكُمْ إِخْرَاجًاhow He will return you into it and then bring you out again,
71:19وَٱللَّهُ جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلْأَرْضَ بِسَاطًاand how He has spread the Earth out for you
71:20لِّتَسْلُكُوا۟ مِنْهَا سُبُلًا فِجَاجًاto walk along its spacious paths?” ’
71:21قَالَ نُوحٌ رَّبِّ إِنَّهُمْ عَصَوْنِى وَٱتَّبَعُوا۟ مَن لَّمْ يَزِدْهُ مَالُهُۥ وَوَلَدُهُۥٓ إِلَّا خَسَارًاNoah said, ‘My Lord, they have disobeyed me and followed those whose riches and children only increase their ruin;
71:22وَمَكَرُوا۟ مَكْرًا كُبَّارًاwho have made a grand plan,
71:23وَقَالُوا۟ لَا تَذَرُنَّ ءَالِهَتَكُمْ وَلَا تَذَرُنَّ وَدًّا وَلَا سُوَاعًا وَلَا يَغُوثَ وَيَعُوقَ وَنَسْرًاsaying, “Do not renounce your gods! Do not renounce Wadd, Suwa, Yaghuth, Yauq, or Nasr!”
71:24وَقَدْ أَضَلُّوا۟ كَثِيرًا ۖ وَلَا تَزِدِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ إِلَّا ضَلَـٰلًاThey have led many astray. Lord, bring nothing but destruction down on the evildoers!’
71:25مِّمَّا خَطِيٓـَٔـٰتِهِمْ أُغْرِقُوا۟ فَأُدْخِلُوا۟ نَارًا فَلَمْ يَجِدُوا۟ لَهُم مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ أَنصَارًاThey were drowned and sent to Hell for their evildoings: they found no one to help them against God.
71:26وَقَالَ نُوحٌ رَّبِّ لَا تَذَرْ عَلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ مِنَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ دَيَّارًاAnd Noah said, ‘Lord, do not leave any of the disbelievers on the earth-
71:27إِنَّكَ إِن تَذَرْهُمْ يُضِلُّوا۟ عِبَادَكَ وَلَا يَلِدُوٓا۟ إِلَّا فَاجِرًا كَفَّارًاif you leave them they will lead Your servants astray and beget only sinners and disbelievers-
71:28رَّبِّ ٱغْفِرْ لِى وَلِوَٰلِدَىَّ وَلِمَن دَخَلَ بَيْتِىَ مُؤْمِنًا وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ وَلَا تَزِدِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ إِلَّا تَبَارًۢاLord, forgive me, my parents, and whoever enters my house as a believer. Forgive believing men and women but bring nothing but ruin down on the evildoers!’
