Surah Al-Ma'arij — 70:38

أَيَطْمَعُ كُلُّ ٱمْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُدْخَلَ جَنَّةَ نَعِيمٍ

Ayatma'u kullum ri'im minhum anyyudkhala jannata Na'eem

Does every one of them expect to enter a Garden of bliss?

Does each one of them hope to be admitted into a garden of bliss?

Reflection

The construction is distributive, each single man of them, so the assumption being described is held privately, one person at a time. Tama' is greedy hoping rather than expectation resting on anything. The answer the passage gives is their origin, which is everyone's origin, and that removes the ground on which a person quietly assumes he is the exception.
