Surah Al-A'raf — 7:51

Allazeenat takhazoo deenahu lahwanw wa la'i-banw wa gharrat humul hayaatud dunyaa; fal Yawma nnannsaahum kamaa nasoo liqaaa'a Yawmihim haazaa wa maa kaanoo bi aayaatinaa yajhadoon

those who took their way of life as amusement and play and were deceived by the life of this world. Today we forget them, just as they forgot the meeting of this day of theirs and denied our signs.

Reflection

The garden-dwellers' answer to the cry for water runs straight into this line, and commentators differ over where their words end and God's begin; by the time the plural we arrives, the speaker has plainly changed. Nansāhum, we forget them, was read as leaving them where they are, a recompense named after the deed it answers, since the Qur'an says elsewhere that God does not forget. What they forgot was an appointment, a meeting fixed for a day the verse calls theirs.
