وَلَا تَأْكُلُوا۟ مِمَّا لَمْ يُذْكَرِ ٱسْمُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ وَإِنَّهُۥ لَفِسْقٌ ۗ وَإِنَّ ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينَ لَيُوحُونَ إِلَىٰٓ أَوْلِيَآئِهِمْ لِيُجَـٰدِلُوكُمْ ۖ وَإِنْ أَطَعْتُمُوهُمْ إِنَّكُمْ لَمُشْرِكُونَ
Wa laa taakuloo mimaa lam yuzkaris mullaahi 'alaihi wa innahoo lafisq; wa innash Shayaateena la yoohoona ilaaa awliyaaa'ihim liyujaadilookum wa in ata'tumoohum innnakum lamushrikoon
Dan janganlah kamu memakan binatang-binatang yang tidak disebut nama Allah ketika menyembelihnya. Sesungguhnya perbuatan yang semacam itu adalah suatu kefasikan. Sesungguhnya setan itu membisikkan kepada kawan-kawannya agar mereka membantah kamu; dan jika kamu menuruti mereka, sesungguhnya kamu tentulah menjadi orang-orang yang musyrik.
And do not eat of that over which the name of God has not been pronounced — that is wickedness. The devils inspire their allies to dispute with you, and if you obey them, you yourselves become those who associate others with God.
Awḥā, ordinarily the word for revelation coming down, is what the devils do to their allies here — two channels of instruction sharing one verb, with obedience to the second named as association. Jurists divide over how wide the prohibition runs: only what was dedicated to another name, or any animal over which the naming was left out, forgetfulness included. The verse itself expects the argument and says so.
