Surah Al-Mujadila — 58:18

Yawma yab'asuhumul laahujamee'an fa yahlifoona lahoo kamaa yahlifoona lakum wa yahsaboona annahum 'alaa shai'; alaaa innahum humul kaaziboon

On the Day God raises them all from the dead, they will swear before Him as they swear before you now, thinking that it will help them. What liars they are!

On the day God raises them all together, they will swear to him as they swear to you, thinking they stand on something. Truly, they are the liars.

Reflection

Swearing is a habit here, and the verse shows it outliving the world that made it useful: the same reflex, produced in front of the one from whom nothing was ever hidden. The Arabic for what they imagine they stand on stays indefinite, ʿalā shayʾin, on some thing, as though the swearer himself could not name what he was counting on.
