۞ أَلَمْ يَأْنِ لِلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ أَن تَخْشَعَ قُلُوبُهُمْ لِذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ وَمَا نَزَلَ مِنَ ٱلْحَقِّ وَلَا يَكُونُوا۟ كَٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ مِن قَبْلُ فَطَالَ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْأَمَدُ فَقَسَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ ۖ وَكَثِيرٌ مِّنْهُمْ فَـٰسِقُونَ
Alam yaani laillzeena aamanooo an takhsha'a quloo buhum lizikril laahi wa maa nazala minal haqqi wa laa yakoonoo kallazeena ootul Kitaaba min qablu fataala 'alaihimul amadu faqasat quloobuhum wa kaseerum minhum faasiqoon
Is it not time for believers to humble their hearts to the remembrance of God and the Truth that has been revealed, and not to be like those who received the Scripture before them, whose time was extended but whose hearts hardened and many of whom were lawbreakers?
Has the time not come for those who believe that their hearts should grow humble at the remembrance of God and the truth that has been sent down, and that they not become like those who were given the scripture before — the age stretched long over them, so their hearts hardened, and many of them are corrupt.
The address here is to believers, so the reproach lands inward, on a community that had already answered the call. What hardens the heart in the example given is duration itself: al-amad stretched long over them, so time occupies the place a specific sin would usually hold. The verse immediately after answers that with dead ground brought back to life, which puts the hardened heart and the hardened earth under one image.
