Surah Qaf — 50:30

يَوْمَ نَقُولُ لِجَهَنَّمَ هَلِ ٱمْتَلَأْتِ وَتَقُولُ هَلْ مِن مَّزِيدٍ

Yawma naqoolu li'jahannama halim talaati wa taqoolu hal mim mazeed

We shall say to Hell on that day, ‘Are you full?’ and it will reply, ‘Are there no more?’

On the day we say to jahannam, "Are you full?" and it answers, "Is there more?"

Reflection

Surah Qaf gives jahannam a voice here, and the answer it gives has been read two ways for centuries: hal min mazīd as an appetite still unsatisfied, or as a question conceding there is no room left. The line arrives immediately after the assurance that God is never unjust to his servants. What follows is the garden brought near, so the passage moves from that question straight to nearness.
