And in their footsteps we sent Isa, son of Maryam, confirming the Torah that came before him; and we gave him the Gospel, in which was guidance and light, confirming the Torah that came before it — a guidance and a reminder for those mindful of God.
The verb that opens this verse is qaffaynā, from the word for the back of the neck: Isa is sent walking in tracks already laid down by the prophets named before him. Confirmation is then stated twice, once of him and once of the Gospel given to him, so continuity holds at the level of the person and of the book. At the close the audience narrows, since the light and guidance are stated openly while the counsel is said to be for those already mindful of God.
