Surah An-Nisa — 4:28

God wishes to lighten your burden; man was created weak.

God wishes to lighten things for you, for the human being was created weak.

Reflection

Lightening is named as God's own intention here, closing a long passage of marriage regulations with a reason rather than another rule. The surrounding verses set three statements of what God wills against a single statement of what those who follow their cravings want, and the contrast is structural. Commentators reading ḍaʿīf in this context often took the weakness specifically as weakness before desire, which is what the passage has been legislating around.
