Reflection

Rajim comes from the verb for pelting with stones, so the sentence of exile is also the giving of a name, the one driven off. In this telling alone, the question God puts to him names what he shaped with his own hands, a phrase found in no other account of the refusal. The argument from fire against clay is answered by attention to the maker, and the verdict follows at once without touching the comparison.
