Surah Ya-Sin — 36:68

وَمَن نُّعَمِّرْهُ نُنَكِّسْهُ فِى ٱلْخَلْقِ ۖ أَفَلَا يَعْقِلُونَ

Wa man nu 'ammirhu nunakkishu fil-khalq; afalaa ya'qiloon

If We extend anyone’s life, We reverse his development. Do they not use their reason?

And whoever we grant long life, we reverse in creation. Will they not then understand?

Reflection

Two hypotheticals stand immediately before this, each opening with a condition: sight blotted out, bodies fixed where they stand. The third case drops the condition, since age reverses a person in plain view of everybody, and the question closing the verse asks why a demonstration already running is not read as one. Nakkasa describes turning a thing upside down.
