Surah Ali 'Imran — 3:146

Wa ka aiyim min Nabiyyin qaatala ma'ahoo ribbiyyoona kaseerun famaa wahanoo limaaa Asaabahum fee sabeelil laahi wa maa da'ufoo wa mas takaanoo; wallaahu yuhibbus saabireen

How many a prophet has fought, and with him many devoted servants of the Lord. They did not lose heart at what struck them in the path of God, nor did they weaken, nor did they yield. And God loves those who are steadfast.

Reflection

Uhud is three verses behind this one, and the rumour there was that Muhammad had been killed. The opening verb carries a difference the reciters preserved: qātala makes the prophet one who fought, qutila makes him one who was killed, and the second reading answers that rumour by pointing at prophets who died with their followers still standing. Either way the sentence moves on to what the men beside him did next.
