فَأَنجَيْنَـٰهُ وَأَهْلَهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱمْرَأَتَهُۥ قَدَّرْنَـٰهَا مِنَ ٱلْغَـٰبِرِينَ
Fa anjainaahu wa ahlahooo illam ra atahoo qaddarnaahaa minal ghaabireen
We saved him and his family- except for his wife: We made her stay behind-
So we saved him and his family, except his wife — we decreed that she would be among those who stayed behind.
The line before has the townspeople sneering that Lut's household keeps itself pure, and the rescue here narrows that household by one. Ghābirīn, those who stayed behind, is used seven times across the scripture, always of this one woman. Her reason goes unstated in this telling, and a later surah supplies it as a betrayal of her husband.
