Surah Al-Mu'minun — 23:97

وَقُل رَّبِّ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ هَمَزَٰتِ ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينِ

Wa qur Rabbi a'oozu bika min hamazaatish Shayaateen

and say, ‘Lord, I take refuge with You from the goadings of the evil ones;

And say, "My Lord, I seek refuge in you from the promptings of the devils,

Reflection

Hamazāt comes from a root for prodding and jabbing, the goad applied to an animal to make it move, so what is asked for here is protection from being provoked into motion. Its placement matters: the command just before it is to answer hostility with something better, and this prayer follows immediately, as though the harder part of restraint were the pressure it puts on the person practising it.
