لَآ إِكْرَاهَ فِى ٱلدِّينِ ۖ قَد تَّبَيَّنَ ٱلرُّشْدُ مِنَ ٱلْغَىِّ ۚ فَمَن يَكْفُرْ بِٱلطَّـٰغُوتِ وَيُؤْمِنۢ بِٱللَّهِ فَقَدِ ٱسْتَمْسَكَ بِٱلْعُرْوَةِ ٱلْوُثْقَىٰ لَا ٱنفِصَامَ لَهَا ۗ وَٱللَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ
Laaa ikraaha fid deeni qat tabiyanar rushdu minal ghayy; famai yakfur bit Taaghooti wa yu'mim billaahi faqadis tamsaka bil'urwatil wusqaa lan fisaama lahaa; wallaahu Samee'un 'Aleem
Tidak ada paksaan untuk (memasuki) agama (Islam); sesungguhnya telah jelas jalan yang benar daripada jalan yang sesat. Karena itu, barang siapa yang ingkar kepada ṭāgūt dan beriman kepada Allah, maka sesungguhnya ia telah berpegang kepada buhul tali yang amat kuat yang tidak akan putus. Dan Allah Maha Mendengar lagi Maha Mengetahui.
There is no compulsion in the way of life. Right guidance stands clear from error. Whoever rejects false power and believes in God has grasped the firmest handhold, one that will never break. And God is all-hearing, all-knowing.
This follows immediately on the verse of the throne, where holding the heavens and the earth costs no weariness, and the image here is a hand closing on something. ʿUrwa is the loop on a water-skin or a bucket, the one part of it made to be gripped, and infiṣām is the word for a snapping apart of what was joined. What is asked of a person is the grip.
