Surah Maryam — 19:30

قَالَ إِنِّى عَبْدُ ٱللَّهِ ءَاتَىٰنِىَ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَجَعَلَنِى نَبِيًّا

Qaala innee 'abdullaahi aataaniyal Kitaaba wa ja'alanee Nabiyyaa

[But] he said: ‘I am a servant of God. He has granted me the Scripture; made me a prophet;

He said, "I am a servant of God; he has given me the scripture and made me a prophet."

Reflection

The first thing the child says of himself is ʿabd, servant, placing rank at its lowest before anything higher is claimed. Both verbs that follow stand in the completed past, spoken by an infant about a scripture not yet in his hands, and the tense has been taken two ways: as reporting what is already actual, or as stating what has been decreed and therefore counts as done.
