قَالَ فَٱخْرُجْ مِنْهَا فَإِنَّكَ رَجِيمٌ
Qaala fakhruj minhaa fa innaka rajeem
‘Get out of here!’ said God. ‘You are an outcast,
God said, "Then get out of here, for you are cast out,
Rajīm is the word to notice here: cast out, driven off — the same term every reciter uses in the formula seeking refuge before opening the Qur'an. The sentence lands at the point where Iblis has refused on the grounds of what the human was made from, and the surah answers that reasoning with expulsion. Stranger still, he goes on calling God his Lord and receives the respite he asks for.
