أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِأَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلْفِيلِ
Alam tara kaifa fa'ala rabbuka bi ashaabil feel
Do you [Prophet] not see how your Lord dealt with the army of the elephant?
Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with the people of the elephant?
Tradition places this event around the year of the Prophet's birth, so the question is put to someone who saw it only by report, and by a report held too widely across Mecca to doubt. Naming the whole expedition after its animal is how Mecca had kept it in memory, and the surah uses that popular name instead of Abraha's. The possessive is singular, your Lord, addressed to one man in a city that was rejecting him, about a sanctuary defended before he was born.
